The advent of the digital age has increased the ability to share documents via the Internet and intranet, and raised the speed of information sharing.  Along with this is the ability for the documents to be seen by the world from any location.  This has increased our productivity, but has also opened our security.  A single document server can be wiped out by a computer virus, revisions can be made to scanned images without our knowledge, and the like.  The Government is still requiring that all its State/County to provide microfilm for deep, long term storage of official records .  This is two fold in reasoning. 1) Offsite Disaster recovery  2) Microfilm is a proven media, that is unchangeable, and provides a static reference point to the scanned image.  This means that recovery from virus attack,  or malicious editing of  digitally captured images can be caught.

Silver based microfilm is rated at 300 years, what's the rating on your hard drives?
